I’m joined today by Jameson Taillon, pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates. In this episode, Jamo recounts what led him to discover the Neubie and how it had a profound impact on his recovery, not to mention how he’s been able to stay strong with minimal equipment and the Neubie while quarantining at home due to MLB facilities shutting down for Covid.
We’re looking forward to seeing what Jameson does in the upcoming season!

I’m Garrett saltpetre. And I believe that the most powerful and transformative way to help people recover from pain and injury, heal from trauma and reach their highest levels of fitness and performance is to focus on the nervous system. In this podcast, we’ll share knowledge from the frontiers of neuroscience and inspirational stories of how applying to knowledge has empowered people from all walks of life to heal, adapt and grow. Welcome to this episode of the undercurrent Podcast. I’m here with Jameson Tyrone from the Pittsburgh Pirates.
[Jamo Taillon] 0:48
Yeah. Thanks for having me,
[Garrett salpeter] 0:50
Man. It’s awesome. Glad you’re here.
[Jamo Taillon] 0:52
Yeah, I got some good treatment and much needed.
[Garrett salpeter] 0:54
So this is this is a fun one because we just got to do some work together. And now it’s rare for us to get to see each other. He’s in Houston in the offseason and Pittsburgh, of course, during the season. So it’s fun when we get to reconnect here.
[Jamo Taillon] 1:07
Yeah, after seeing the facility, I think I’m going to be coming.
[Garrett salpeter] 1:12
It’s good. We love it. We love it. So can you just for our listeners who may not follow baseball as close to anything, can you just tell us a little bit about your background and your kind of early career just give us a little bit of who you are sure.
[Jamo Taillon] 1:26
So grew up in The Woodlands not too far from here. First rounder out of high school second overall pick after Bryce Harper had a steady climb through the minor leagues ran into some injury troubles, had my first Tommy John surgery in 2014. Rehab that got back on the field, got called up to the majors in 2016. I’ve been up with Pittsburgh ever since I recently had a second Tommy John surgery in 2019.
[Jamo Taillon] 1:54
And that’s really when I started learning about you guys. Throughout that process. Anthony Rendon at my gym, uses a newbie machine. And I just knew that I was missing something in my health and my recovery and my training. I don’t know I need to stay on the field, I need to be healthy. And to this point, my career I haven’t been on the field as much as I’d like. So now if you guys so change my training programme and diet, and I’m trying to stay healthy, and from here on out, not run into any more injury.
[Garrett salpeter] 2:23
Amen to that. Amen. So we connected a couple months after you had that Tommy John, the second Tommy John surgery, right. So can you can you tell us a little bit about your experience? So having the Tommy John five years prior in 2014, your recovery then compared to now using the new being just kind of the overall process?
[Jamo Taillon] 2:44
Yeah, yeah. So I mean, my first Tommy John surgery, like, my rehab and recovery was pretty much doing external rotation with bands, it was just really Elementary, not very advanced. So just like even from the team perspective, what we’ve been able to do in six years with our medical departments pretty amazing. And then obviously meeting you bringing the newbie into my into my programme.
[Jamo Taillon] 3:05
Initially, I viewed it as like, this is my last chance here, like I need to do everything I can for my rehab, I need to put myself in the best position to stay healthy. That’s where you guys come in, you know, I feel like that took me to the next level. Originally, initially, I felt like the newbie was almost an insurance policy for me, like throughout the season, I’m not getting the treatment I need or I’m not feeling as good as I want. You know, I can hop on the machine and they’ll fix me and save me. But then over time I started learning about it. Started learning how I can incorporate it into my programme a little better. Now I’m using it as activation. I’m using it not just for my arm, but I’m using it before I do leg day before I squat, I’m using it for recovery. I’m using it for a reset, using it for my hand back. So it’s like the more I’ve had it, the more I’ve gotten into using it.
[Garrett salpeter] 3:51
That’s awesome. I love I love hearing all that. So So let’s walk me through your experience a little bit. So when we first worked with each other at Fairchild sports performance, and Katie are he Houston Houston. Yeah. And the first of the first day we met there, we did that scan, we found some spots and what was your was your experience in your elbow like day one?
[Jamo Taillon] 4:13
Yeah. So I was shocked with the scan, that’s a sensation. But we found some hotspots. And I think we worked through it for 10 or 15 minutes. And I mean, its direct results. So you feel a certain way coming in, you feel a certain way with the hotspots, and then you do some treatment, you work through it. By the end. It’s like not only do I feel great, but I feel like I’m ready to go throw right, you know. So I just felt like I saw direct results like day one. And that’s, you don’t really have to sell me on it. I know my body. I know what it feels like. And after going through it for a short amount of time. I was like,
[Garrett salpeter] 4:48
That’s awesome. Awesome. Thank you for sharing that. And then so you were using it. You know, it kind of seemed like it kind of changed the trajectory of your progress. Hurry. And then this season while you were recovering, this was the quarantine that COVID season. And so tell us a little bit about your experience, you know, having the facility close use it for training and other stuff that you’re able to explore.
[Jamo Taillon] 5:14
Yeah. So, I mean, once spring training shut down, no one really knew what was going on. Our facility shut down for a little bit. I had no access to a weight room, not even my apartment weight room. I was in Florida at the time. So I had my newbie, and I had a Wattbike in my apartment.
[Jamo Taillon] 5:30
That was my training. So I was using the newbie, not just for my PT, but I was using it for my weightlifting. So I was changing the frequency dropping it down and doing squats, deadlifts, hamstrings, like I mean, it was literally my lifeline and training. So yeah, I mean, I was super happy that I was quarantined with my new V. Bike, at least to be able to do something, I felt like, by having those resources, I was able to not just like keep the status quo, but I was able to definitely get ahead of everyone else.
[Garrett salpeter] 5:59
Awesome. Very good. Very good. And then let’s talk a little bit about your thoughts on how you’ve been working it and kind of intend to with the upcoming season, work it into your arm care routine. Yeah, so
[Jamo Taillon] 6:11
We were just messing around out there with some new things that my brain because that’s the fun thing about the new view is that you can just find so many ways to get creative with it. But I do a lot of like active range of motion work and control range of motion after I throw. So a bunch of lift offs and range strength. So we were just doing some lift offs with a newbie. And I can already tell you, I’m going to take that one into the season. Obviously scanning, making sure I’m just taking note and kind of understanding where my hotspots are throughout the year I think will be big, too.
[Garrett salpeter] 6:46
Awesome. So I love how open your heart to doing this and use it in so many ways. Obviously, you know, using it on the elbow, I think that yeah, that was that was kind of a nice, a nice kind of bridge into it. And I’m just grateful to you for being open to trying to do other things too.
[Jamo Taillon] 7:03
Yeah. Started with the elbow, Vaseline. Total Body. Yeah.
[Garrett salpeter] 7:06
Tell us also, about your experience. Recently, you know, a little a little bit of a heavier cycle. I think it’s just cool to kind of see the range, you’re in this heavier training cycle tweet, you’re back on the last rep, last end of the deadlift. And tell us about your experience, like what we’re working on today using using the newbie, and you’re back there too.
[Jamo Taillon] 7:26
Yeah, yes. So I was deadlifting. And I was so encouraged because I’m not a big deadlift er, this year, I’ve made so much progress with my deadlift. And on Monday, last rep. Last set, I felt something when I was at the top, drop the weight. I felt okay, I went home, I use my newbie right away, but I didn’t have anyone with me to scan at the moment. And then ever since Monday, it’s kind of progressively just locked up spasm gotten worse. So we came in here we scan, we checked it out, we check some strength. I mean, I was hardly able to touch my toes when I got here he saw and then by the end, you know, I feel like I could at least do some sort of lower body workout. Like I’m not scared to go sit in my car now or anything.
[Garrett salpeter] 8:06
That’s awesome. Very good. Very good. Any last thoughts or anything that you’d share for other athletes who are you know, maybe have heard about it but are on the fence or you know, kind of thinking about it?
[Jamo Taillon] 8:20
Yeah, so I mean, I’ve seen direct results like it’s not it’s not a scam I’m not you no one’s forced me to say this. Like, I’ve never felt better in my life. You know, I went through second Tommy John rehab, there’s not a tonne of guys that have gone through that. But I can confidently say like, my elbow has never felt like this since I was a kid. Like I’m excited to go play catch, I’m excited to throw.
[Jamo Taillon] 8:43
It’s a refreshing feeling because before I had this surgery, or even after I was nervous to throw I was nervous to fragging open a door like my elbow hurts so badly all the time. And now I’m like literally looking forward to playing catch so nice. You know, those are the simple joys I love what I do and I love that I’m back to getting to do it. And then as far as the newbie like it is what you put into it you know if you get a machine or if you know someone that has one I just encourage people to learn about it and to stay curious and interested in learning and finding new ways to use it. That’s kind of how my experience was just an organic like started with the elbow once the shoulder once the back went to activation and just once the master reset before bed I were whoop and I started like tracking my sleep after do the master reset.
[Garrett salpeter] 9:29
So yeah, what have you what have you seen on that front?
[Jamo Taillon] 9:31
Way deeper sleep on an ice system basis? Yeah, night sleep time. So I don’t know. I would just say stay curious and learn about it.
[Garrett salpeter] 9:39
Awesome. I love it. Thank you so much for sharing that and for having me. And I’m fired up. I know our whole team is fired up to see you. Thanks. And yeah, I’m fired up. Yeah.
